
ECOWAS summit undermined by coup nations' new alliance
The departure of three of its junta-led members raises questions about the West African regional bloc's future.
The Alliance of Sahel States is a confederation formed in 2023 by Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger. Established as a mutual defense pact to combat terrorism and other security threats, the alliance has also announced plans to work toward economic integration and a common currency.
