U.N. vote calls on U.K. to return site of U.S. military base to Mauritius
The non-binding U.N. resolution called for returning the Chagos Islands, home to a military facility, within six months.
The British Indian Ocean Territory is a U.K. overseas territory comprised of seven atolls in the Indian Ocean. The entire population, the Chagossians, was forcibly removed in the 1960s and 1970s to make way for a joint U.S.-U.K. military base on the island of Diego Garcia.
