Syria's president calls for 'complete lifting of sanctions' in U.N. address
The appearance by al-Sharaa, who came to power in December, signals a shift in Syria’s international engagement.
The Agreement on Disengagement between Israel and Syria was signed in Geneva in May 1974, following the 1973 Yom Kippur War. It formalized the ceasefire, separated the forces on the Golan Heights, and established a buffer zone between Line A (Israeli side) and Line B (Syrian side). The U.N. Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) was created to supervise the buffer zone and the limited-force areas on both sides. The agreement remains a foundational accord for stability on the Israel-Syria frontier.
