A little known international organization is in charge of mediating U.S.-Mexico water sharing during a time of drought.
The International Boundary and Water Commission is a binational commission established in 1889 that applies boundary and water treaties between the U.S. and Mexico. It manages the equitable distribution of the Colorado River and Rio Grande waters, oversees international flood control systems, maintains the border demarcation, and collaboratively resolves transboundary sanitation and water quality disputes between the two nations.
