Famine hits and atrocities feared as war engulfs Sudan's Kordofan region

The past month's intensified violence has led 45,000 people to flee their homes, seeking safety within or outside Kordofan.

U.N. human rights chief Volker Türk warned of a new wave of atrocities in Sudan, where the oil-rich Kordofan region risks becoming "another el-Fasher" with ethnically motivated killings and widespread sexual violence.

As the intense fighting escalates, Türk said on Wednesday, many civilians there are reportedly being detained for 'collaborating' with opposing parties while hateful and divisive speech risks fueling the violence.
