U.N. health agency members closing in on a new pandemic agreement

Talks will reconvene next week to finish a proposed global accord for the World Health Assembly to take up in May.

GENEVA (AN) — Negotiators raced to wrap up a proposed global agreement on handling future pandemics, with progress reported in the final hours.

The World Health Organization's Intergovernmental Negotiating Body had scheduled the talks until the end of Friday to draft an agreement that could go to the 194-nation World Health Assembly for approval in May. Instead, the talks went on until most of the text was agreed upon on Saturday.
