
A lifeline for the ocean: U.N. High Seas Treaty secures ratification
A global treaty that took almost two decades to create will become law early next year, enabling conservation areas.
The U.N. High Seas Treaty is a landmark international agreement to protect marine life in areas beyond national jurisdiction. Adopted in 2023, it will become international law 120 days after 60 nations ratify it. As of August 2025, 54 nations have done so, making its entry into force imminent.
