A geopolitical storm is brewing around the Panama Canal, with the U.S. and China clashing at the United Nations over control of the key global trade artery.

The confrontation on Monday, which took place during a U.N. Security Council meeting on maritime security, saw the U.S. warn that Beijing’s influence over the waterway could endanger global commerce, while China accused Washington of fabricating a pretext to retake the canal.
