HRW says global rights under strain and warns of U.S. ‘authoritarianism’

WASHINGTON (AN) — Human Rights Watch said the global human rights system is under growing strain as authoritarian governments consolidate power and democratic norms weaken, citing the policies of U.S. President Donald Trump alongside those of China and Russia in its annual World Report 2026.

In Wednesday's 529-page report, which reviews human rights practices in more than 100 countries, HRW’s executive director, Philippe Bolopion, wrote that confronting what he described as a global authoritarian wave — including what the organization characterized as increasingly authoritarian practices by the U.S. government — is “the challenge of a generation.” He urged rights-respecting democracies to form a strategic alliance to defend fundamental freedoms.
