U.N. peacekeeping force in Lebanon to wind down after five decades

Lebanese officials wanted UNIFIL to remain because of the country's inability to maintain regional security on its own.

The U.N. Security Council unanimously voted to terminate its peacekeeping mission in southern Lebanon, UNIFIL, by the end of 2026.

The decision on Thursday, concluding nearly five decades of operations, followed strong pressure from the United States and Israel. UNIFIL was created after Israel’s 1978 invasion of southern Lebanon.
