NASA fast-tracks lunar nuclear reactor amid new space race

NASA's plan is governed by a complex framework of international accords including the 1967 Outer Space Treaty.

WASHINGTON (AN) — Acting NASA Administrator Sean Duffy directed the U.S. agency to fast-track plans to put a nuclear fission reactor on the Moon.

"We're in a race to the moon, in a race with China to the moon," Duffy, who also serves as U.S. transportation secretary, told a news conference on Tuesday. "And to have a base on the moon, we need energy."
