Leadership race for U.N.'s top job narrows ahead of public hearings

The race to succeed United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has entered its public phase with the close of nominations, but the narrow field underscores how little of the outcome will be decided in public.

Four candidates are now formally in contention, according to the U.N. General Assembly, which has historically served less to finalize the field than to clarify which candidates have meaningful backing.
