U.S. sinks IMO-led plan for world's first global carbon fee on shipping

A vote on a global plan to cut maritime emissions was postponed for a year, in a win for the Trump administration.

The International Maritime Organization delayed a final vote on its plan to impose a fee on carbon emissions to clean up shipping, bowing to pressure from the United States, Russia, and Saudi Arabia, and other petrostates.

The London-based shipping body of the United Nations agreed on Friday to put off a vote on its emissions plan until 2026, a year later than planned. It would have created the first global carbon pricing mechanism for any industrial sector.
