El Fasher under siege: U.N. warns of escalating violence and war crimes

The U.N. chief called for an immediate end to fighting as world leaders prepare for an annual high-level gathering.

U.N. chief António Guterres voiced "grave alarm" at the rapidly deteriorating situation in Sudan's North Darfur, warning of mounting risks to civilians trapped in the besieged city of El Fasher.

"The fighting must stop now," Guterres said on Saturday, reiterating his call for an "immediate cessation of hostilities" and for warring parties to ensure the "unhindered" delivery of humanitarian aid.
