IPU reports most lawmakers face intimidation, online abuse dominant

Survey of parliamentarians points to widespread public hostility; women and minority lawmakers report higher risk.

A majority of parliamentarians worldwide report experiencing intimidation, harassment or violence from members of the public, with online abuse emerging as the dominant form, according to a new study by the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

The report, released on Wednesday, draws on survey responses from 519 parliamentarians across five countries — Argentina, Benin, Italy, Malaysia and the Netherlands — along with a broader global survey. The IPU represents 183 national parliaments.
