Global waste crisis deepens as costs rise and garbage systems fall behind

WASHINGTON (AN) – Rapid population growth, urbanization, rising incomes and consumption are driving a surge in municipal solid waste that is overwhelming local systems and budgets, the World Bank reports.

When waste is poorly managed, the consequences are far-reaching: environmental pollution intensifies, greenhouse gas emissions rise and valuable natural resources are lost, threatening public health, economic development and urban livability.
