Cities press for bigger role in U.N. fight against land degradation

COP17 declaration seeks direct finance and a permanent voice for local governments to turn restoration pledges into action.

Mayors and regional leaders at U.N. desertification talks in Mongolia called for a more permanent role in global land policy and more direct access to financing, arguing that national commitments will accomplish little unless cities and regions can put them into practice.

About 30 mayors, governors and other local and regional leaders on Friday adopted the Ulaanbaatar Declaration at COP17 of the U.N. Convention to Combat Desertification, committing to stronger action on sustainable land management and drought resilience while seeking a more structured role for cities and regions in the treaty process.
