Keeping peak global warming to around 1.8° Celsius may be necessary if the world is to retain a realistic prospect of returning to the Paris Agreement's 1.5° C. limit this century, according to a major new assessment that sharply narrows the remaining room for delay.
The U.N. Environment Program report concludes that exceeding 1.5° is now expected, likely within the next few years. But how far temperatures rise beyond that threshold could determine whether bringing them back down remains achievable.
