Switzerland's significant glacier melt accelerates in U.N. preservation year

Almost 1,400 Swiss glaciers remain, the most among European nations, but over 1,000 small glaciers have already melted.

ZURICH (AN) – Swiss glaciers lost 3% of their total ice volume in the latest hydrological year, marking the fourth-biggest annual decline on record.

The loss, driven by a combination of low winter snow and extreme summer heatwaves, saw glaciers shed an average of –1.6 metres water equivalent of ice mass, a figure substantially worse than the 2010−2020 average.
