U.N. chief issues stern warning of financial collapse from unpaid dues

António Guterres warned the United Nations’ 193 member countries that the organization faces the risk of financial collapse unless governments either pay assessed contributions in full and on time or agree to overhaul long-standing financial rules, according to a letter sent to all permanent representatives.

The letter marked Guterres’ most explicit warning to date about the organization’s finances, framing the situation as an imminent threat rather than a recurring liquidity shortfall.
