Argentina completes exit from WHO, straining global health coordination

The nation says it will pursue bilateral and regional deals as it exits the U.N. health agency that it accuses of ideological bias.

GENEVA (AN) — Argentina’s withdrawal from the World Health Organization has taken effect, after a yearlong process the government framed as a move to reassert national control over health policy.

The decision, first notified in March 2025, became effective on Tuesday under the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties, which allows withdrawal one year after formal notice to the treaty’s depositary — in this case, the United Nations secretary-general.
