Council of Europe advances plan to ease illegal migrant deportations

Nations will consider weakening migrant protections, making it easier to deport illegal migrants and foreign criminals.

European ministers from the 46-nation Council of Europe agreed to negotiate a new approach to the European Convention on Human Rights that cracks down on illegal migrants and foreign criminals.

The agreement on Wednesday, reflecting a political hardening of attitudes toward immigrants globally, sets in motion a work process that could lead to the adoption of a political declaration at a summit planned in May.
