GENEVA (AN) — Former Iraqi president Barham Salih, a British-educated engineer and prominent Kurdish politician, has been tapped to serve as the next head of the U.N. refugee agency – and its first leader to have the first-hand experience of being a political exile from one's home nation.
An official letter confirming Salih's selection surfaced among media outlets after Devex first reported it based on anonymous sources. "The process is ongoing, and once it’s finished, there will be an an official announcement made by the United Nations," Alessandra Vellucci, director of the U.N. Information Service in Geneva, told a regular press briefing on Friday.
