Israel’s expanded Gaza offensive stokes U.N. famine warnings

A UNICEF official confirmed reports of families who try to flee Gaza City but find the evacuation areas are even less safe.

United Nations officials have issued grave warnings about a "catastrophic" humanitarian crisis in Gaza, as Israel’s military prepares to expand its offensive and orders a full evacuation of Gaza City, a move expected to displace hundreds of thousands of people.

The warnings coincide with a severe food crisis on the ground. Ricardo Pires, a UNICEF communications manager who recently visited the region, told a press briefing in Geneva on Tuesday that since famine has already been declared in Gaza City, a "very concerning trend" of spiking malnutrition has been observed for the sixth consecutive month.
