United Nations officials have issued grave warnings about a "catastrophic" humanitarian crisis in Gaza, as Israel’s military prepares to expand its offensive and orders a full evacuation of Gaza City, a move expected to displace hundreds of thousands of people.
The warnings coincide with a severe food crisis on the ground. Ricardo Pires, a UNICEF communications manager who recently visited the region, told a press briefing in Geneva on Tuesday that since famine has already been declared in Gaza City, a "very concerning trend" of spiking malnutrition has been observed for the sixth consecutive month.
