German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called for the United States and Europe to "repair and revive trans-Atlantic trust together," saying NATO membership serves American as well as European interests.

Opening the Munich Security Conference on Friday, Merz acknowledged a widening rift in relations over the past year and framed the gathering as an attempt to stabilize cooperation between Washington and its allies.
