In the famine-hit western Darfur region of Sudan, rescue efforts are underway after a landslide, triggered by torrential rain, wiped out a remote mountain village.

The armed group that controls the area said on Wednesday that the landslide killed an estimated 1,000 people, prompting an appeal for foreign help to recover more bodies and rescue residents.
