U.N. warns of highest nuclear threat in decades, cites strained treaties

The threat of nuclear weapons has escalated to its "highest levels in decades," U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres warned, as a high-level meeting pushed for renewed global efforts to eliminate them.

The meeting on Friday was held to commemorate the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons. In a formal message, Guterres said "nuclear weapons deliver no security – only the promise of annihilation."
