World leaders opened their annual debate with sharply differing views of war and global cooperation as Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva warned the United Nations' credibility has never been lower while U.S. President Donald Trump defended his decision to wage war against Iran.
The speeches on Tuesday followed an appeal from United Nations General Assembly President Khalilur Rahman of Bangladesh for governments to restore confidence in an institution confronting wars, financial strains and persistent divisions among its most powerful members.
