GENEVA (AN) — With winter fast approaching, United Nations officials are urgently appealing to the international community for aid to assist hundreds of thousands of Afghans affected by a powerful earthquake that struck the nation's eastern provinces.

During a press briefing on Tuesday, Indrika Ratwatte, the U.N. humanitarian coordinator for Afghanistan, painted a dire picture of the crisis, saying the quake and its aftershocks killed more than 2,200 people and injured thousands more. The disaster destroyed nearly 7,000 homes and affected 500,000 people in one of the country's most remote regions.
