GENEVA (AN) — Western Europe has endured its hottest June and July on record and is facing another round of extreme heat, even as parts of Eastern Europe and Scandinavia remain unusually cool and wet — a contrast that climate scientists say illustrates how familiar weather patterns are playing out in a substantially warmer world.
Persistent bands of high and low pressure have stretched across much of the Northern Hemisphere in recent months, producing prolonged heat and drought in some regions while bringing cooler temperatures and heavier rainfall to others, according to the World Meteorological Organization.
