Grynspan widens lead in race for next U.N. secretary-general

Costa Rican candidate wins 10 positive votes in fourth Security Council straw poll, but potential P5 vetoes remain unknown.

Rebeca Grynspan strengthened her lead in the race to become the next U.N. secretary-general, winning support from 10 of the 15 Security Council members in the latest secret straw poll.

Grynspan, a former Costa Rican vice president who heads U.N. Trade and Development, received 10 “encourage” votes, three “discourage” votes and two “no opinion” votes in the council’s fourth informal ballot on Sept. 29, according to results reported by diplomatic sources.
