U.N. rights chief warns of system-wide collapse due to funding crisis

OHCHR is in 'survival mode' as it is forced to make wide-ranging cuts to programs and investigative mandates.

GENEVA (AN) — As human rights abuses escalate globally, the U.N. human rights chief says his office lacks a sufficient operating budget to keep up.

"Our resources have been slashed, along with funding for human rights organizations, including at the grassroots level, around the world," Volker Türk, who heads the Office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, told a news conference on Wednesday. "We are in survival mode."
