Costa Rica's Rebeca Grynspan widened her lead in the race to become the next United Nations secretary-general, securing 11 positive votes in a Security Council straw poll that left the late-entering candidate from the United Arab Emirates trailing the three leading Latin American contenders.

The seventh informal poll, held behind closed doors at U.N. headquarters in New York on Friday, gave Grynspan 11 encouragements and four discouragements, according to leaked results published by the civil society campaign 1 for 8 Billion. The results have not been officially confirmed.
