Rodrigues-Birkett of Guyana takes lead in second U.N. chief straw poll

No candidate reaches nine-vote threshold as opposition grows and race to succeed António Guterres remains wide open.

Guyana's Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett moved into first place in the race to become the next United Nations secretary-general after a second confidential Security Council straw poll, overtaking previous frontrunner Rebeca Grynspan as support weakened among the leading candidates.

Rodrigues-Birkett received eight “encourage” votes, three “discourage” votes and four “no opinion” votes in Friday's informal ballot, according to leaked results. Costa Rica's Grynspan received seven encourages, four discourages and four no opinions, while Argentina's Rafael Grossi also received seven encourages but six discourages.
