Trump demands NATO ‘loyalty’ as Rutte tries to keep alliance on track

The NATO chief used spending charts, jobs figures and praise to make the case for the alliance ahead of a Turkish summit.

WASHINGTON (AN) – NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte sought to reassure U.S. President Donald Trump that European allies are increasing defense spending and supporting American security interests, as the alliance tries to avoid a confrontation at its summit in Ankara next month.

Speaking alongside Rutte in the Oval Office on Wednesday, Trump again criticized NATO allies for failing to offer stronger support during the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran, saying he wanted “loyalty” from countries that depend heavily on U.S. military power.
