U.N. and U.K. lawmakers urge pause in Chagos deal over people displaced

Parliamentary inquiry finds displaced islanders were 'consistently sidelined' as diaspora forms government in exile.

A House of Lords committee reported the British government consistently excluded the Chagossian people from negotiations over a treaty to transfer sovereignty of their home archipelago to Mauritius.

The findings, published on Wednesday by the U.K. Parliament's International Relations and Defense Committee, follow a survey of over 3,000 displaced islanders. "Chagossians have been consistently sidelined," the report said, adding that "successive U.K. governments have failed to engage meaningfully with the community throughout this process."
