Atlas maps migratory bird routes in 56 countries, targets policy gaps

New dataset aims to align national policies along shared migration routes as biodiversity pressures mount.

A new mapping tool is giving governments their most detailed picture yet of how migratory birds depend on ecosystems across borders, as negotiators confront persistent failures to coordinate conservation across those routes.

The Atlas for the Americas Flyways was unveiled on Thursday while delegates from more than 130 countries met at a weeklong summit in Campo Grande, Brazil, where they were considering more than 40 new proposals for protecting species that move seasonally between habitats, often over long distances, to feed or breed.
