UNITED NATIONS (AN) — Costa Rica's Rebeca Grynspan widened her lead in the race to become the next United Nations secretary-general, securing support from 12 of the Security Council's 15 members as a newly nominated Turkish contender failed to gain traction.

Grynspan received 12 encouragements and three discouragements in the eighth informal straw poll Thursday, improving on her previous result of 11 encouragements and four discouragements, according to results published by PassBlue and the civil society campaign 1 for 8 Billion. The Security Council does not officially release the voting figures.
