Organizers say RightsCon canceled in Zambia over Chinese pressure

Access Now says foreign interference over Taiwenese activists forced cancellation days before leading human rights summit.

RightsCon was scheduled to be held at Zambia's biggest conference center, where construction of a new China-funded wing was completed in 2022.

WASHINGTON (AN) — Access Now canceled RightsCon 2026 days before it was set to open in Lusaka, saying foreign interference and pressure over Taiwanese civil society participation made it impossible to proceed in Zambia or online.

The digital rights summit had been scheduled for next week, with more than 2,600 people expected in person and 1,100 online, representing more than 150 countries and 750 institutions.
