U.N. appeal shows how regional conflict is reshaping Lebanon

While the request reflects immediate needs, officials describe the crisis as a threat to Lebanon's long-term resilience.

The U.N. humanitarian agency said it needs nearly $640 million over the next six months to help Lebanon.

The United Nations has sharply increased its humanitarian appeal for Lebanon, warning that four months of war have evolved from an emergency displacement crisis into a longer-term challenge for the country's infrastructure, public services and social stability.

The U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs is seeking nearly $640 million over the next six months, more than double the amount requested when hostilities escalated in March. U.N. officials say 1 million people remain displaced, 3,500 have been killed and 10,000 injured since the conflict began.
